History speak for itself regarding the color of choice.  As for now, the
machine vision is improved a lot since "good old days", plus you can
change light color for illumination as well as angle of incidence of the
illumination.  Sure you can use any color of the solder mask you want,
as long as you are willing to pay.  As an engineer, I will stay with
"good enough" until I do have requirement to enhance the performance of
the assembly by changing color (which we did --- once ;-).
