I have looked at the following:

Photon Dynamics RTI-7550 (CR Technology machine)
VI Technology Vi-3000
Orbotech VT-9000
Teradyne 7300
Qualectron ESV-303 (benchtop)

What do you want to look at?
Placement (X,Y,theta)?
Polarity?
Solder Quantity?
Solder Quality (shorts/opens/insufficient)?
Text (OCR)?

You can start by eliminating the RTI-7550, Photon Dynamics is not selling AOI machines anymore.
If you want inline, eliminate the Benchtop machines.
Do you place lots of SOJ's and PLCC's and want to verify solder joints, Eliminate the machines with only one downward looking camera.
I liked the Orbotech and the Teradyne. they are both multi camera/multi light systems. I thought the repair station hardware/software was/is better on the Orbotech.
The programming complexity is about the same for the Orbotech and Teradyne, but once you get your libraries built, programming is easy (same with all machines)
I liked the software on the Vi Technology machine, it was easy to use.

One thing I find is more of a pain that it can be worth is performing text recognition, silkscreen can vary part to part, vendor to vendor, I am a CM and found I got more false calls than it I wanted since I cannot always control what parts I get. I would rather have barcode validation on my placement machine feeder setups.

I'm sure there are others that I did not look at that are good too. feel free to email me offline if you have other questions.

Subject: [TN] AOI

Morning Technet,

We're in the process of evaluating different AOI machines to put after our
SMT reflow ovens. I've been trying to read up on AOI, and have seen
differences in machines such as 2D imaging vs. 3D imaging, differences in
lighting sources (xenon, lcd, etc.), vector imaging vs. grey scale
correlation, etc. I wanted to query the Technet crowd to see what kind of
knowledge/experience you all have on AOI and maybe even on specific
machines.

Thanks,

Robert Vega
