My understanding is that the lotion is considered non-contaminating and
solder-safe; free of chemicals that may adversely affect solderability or
cause corrosion of electronic components if it passes Flux Induced
Corrosion (Copper Mirror Method) test defined in IPC-TM-650 Test Methods
Manual

<< File: ATT00009.htm >> What happens when we use "IC Lotion" on our hands
and then handle the boards or components (thru-hole)? That must be a major
problem.

Even with clean bare hands, some people's skins have more oil than others,
and this can deposit on the board. I have seen some fingerprints that did
not allow for proper adhesion of coating. I have also seen how
contamination on a glove was transferred to several boards, and caused
issues with coating quality. We use gloves and cots, but either way you go,
the biggest key will be how well your personnel keep their hands clean, or
how often they change their cots or gloves.

Advice requested,

I'm sure this topic has been broached before, but I would like to solicit
your opinions on the subject of using fingercots or gloves verses using
bare hands when handling components or PCB's before soldering or conformal
coating (IPC Class II). I tried to do a TechNet search on this, but it
failed to go through for some reason.

I am of the opinion that careful handling of components or PCB's by their
non-soldering surfaces with clean bare hands is the way to go. Of course,
it is up to manufacturing personnel to keep their hands in a clean
condition. From what I have seen, gloves just tend to soak up and disperse
multiple contaminants on soldering surfaces and they give personnel a false
sense of security. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance for the advice.
