Can't remember the exact figures now or where they came from, but the old
CRT type monitors are hopeless for shop floor work, as they generate a
field you could keep cows in. Most TFT flat panel monitors are great,
however, and I introduced dozens of them to the shop floor in my last
company, after convincing our ever-vigilent QA that they were not going to
upset all the precious product. They have the advantage of taking up much
less room than normal monitors, even though they are more expensive.
Precious product by the way, was military avionics - Class 3 stuff.

Subject: [TN] Computer Monitors and ESD

We are looking to step up to the 21st century and put computers at each
operators work station. With the amount of paper that we use that should
save a tree or two along with all the other obvious benefits.

The question I've been asked is what about ESD? I've taken a static meter
and went all around a monitor and got some interesting results. The screen
and plastic around the screen showed only a couple of hundred volts. Just
around to the sides of the screen it jumped to a few thousand volts.
Further
back on the sides it dropped back to a couple of hundred.

My question to you all is, what do you do with monitors at work stations
where you are handling static sensitive components?

Thanks,

KennyB
