Grant,

If the boards are conformally coated, I suggest you completely strip them,
clean them and re-coat them. Any components that are not coated, I would
replace as they're probably not sealed in any way (mechanical switches,
trim pots, etc).

Check carefully for corrosion damage - the composition of the smoke will
depend on the materials combusted, and you could have all kinds of acidic
or alkalinic nasties in there.

If the boards are not coated, I would be much more concerned about being
able to check sufficiently well for smoke damage. Whether you trash them or
not will depend on their value. If the PCB's and components are expensive,
I would consider thoroughly cleaning the assemblies, removing all the
components, carefully checking the boards and components separately for
damage and remounting the components that are OK. Reliability should not
then be impaired unless your cleaning and inspection processes are
doubtful.

Peter

'netters,

Can anyone offer advice on how to deal with smoke damaged assemblies wrt
possible damage and effects on reliability? Should it be trashed, cleaned
up
etc? It appears that there may not have been any direct exposure to fire or
heat but certainly to smoke.

TIA
Grant
