Any computer monitors are kept a minimum of 12" away from static sensitive
material. (ESD Association recommends a minimum of 12" - see section
6.2.3.2 of the ANSI/ESD S20.20-1999) Most are placed in the corner of the
workstation away from where the assemblers are building the products.
Typically this a 2 - 3 feet away.

Subject: [TN] Computer Monitors and ESD
We are looking to step up to the 21st century and put computers at each
operators work station. With the amount of paper that we use that should
save a tree or two along with all the other obvious benefits.
The question I've been asked is what about ESD? I've taken a static meter
and went all around a monitor and got some interesting results. The screen
and plastic around the screen showed only a couple of hundred volts. Just
around to the sides of the screen it jumped to a few thousand volts. Further
back on the sides it dropped back to a couple of hundred.
My question to you all is, what do you do with monitors at work stations
where you are handling static sensitive components?
Thanks,
KennyB
