Hi Grant,
Some years ago I worked in a Chemical and Metallurgical Laboratory and we offered the service of cleaning assemblies after water and smoke damage.
I cleaned quite a few products on behalf of the insurers with a high success rate. The largest thing was a 300 MB Winchester disc drive. This thing was the size of a Bendix washing machine, how things have changed.
The only bits of advice I would add to the other excellent replies would be final rinse in distilled or DI water and low temperature bake (say 50C overnight) before connecting to the electricity supply again.
Regards
Eric Dawson
