With a tinned wire, pull test results will be all over the place, due to the
wire resting in different spots in the termination piece to piece...

Get ahold of MIL-T-7928... good ring terminal bible. Regardless of the
make, we subject all UL and MIL ring terminals in house to MIL-7928 test
criteria.

... doesn't 610-B also have some info on this subject?

Jean-François,

This is something I brought up back in May of 2002. Look for "Crimped
Connections" in the subject line. There should be about 12 posts following
this thread in the Archives.

To add more input, I have a document from Amp (now Tyco) Engineering stating
that pre-tinning stranded wire before crimp termination is not acceptable.
I can send it to you if you'd like.

I've had to battle the "we've always done it this way" attitude along with
the notion that they are running "a lot of current" through the connection.
My answer to that is, hope you're not running more current than the pin or
lug was designed for.

Good luck,

Phil Nutting

Subject: [TN] tined wire with insulated lug

Hi All,

I'm trying to find acceptance criteria for crimped lugs. Is it acceptable
to have a pre-tined wire
crimped in a ring terminal? Since the wire is tined, it won't compress as
much as it would if wasn't.
Can that cause reliability problems?
