To muddy the waters a bit, if you DON'T get the digest version...
What I hate is when the previous message is totally stripped away and the
response sent has no clues as to what the original message was about.
To really get a few people's goats, that was one thing I did not like about
many of Moonman's postings - he would totally remove the previous message,
and give a few word flip answer that gave no clue about what he was
referring to half the time, something like, "Now that's what I'm talking
about!" is all it said. If you wanted to know what he was responding to,
you had to go and review the previous messages in the thread, which, many
times, I delete right after reading them. When he gave information, it was
excellent info, once you got past the crude language, but half his messages
were totally unnecessary flip responses.
Before you respond to a forum post, realize you are emailing 1000 people. I
always try to consider the following. Does what you have to say add
anything meaningful to the discussion? Have you read the other responses
yet, and have any of them already said what you plan to say? (there were
tons of different yet identical responses to the *.pcb question yesterday).
If you just want to say something cute and flip, maybe just send it to the
original poster, not the whole list. Humour doesn't always transfer well in
a written form, so it's better to save those kind of responses for close
personal friends.
And, if stripping away the old message, leave enough that people can know
the context of what you are talking about. Or take out the footers, but
leave the messages.

Previous message stated in part:

What I do hate when reading a digest form of a list is the people who don't
strip out the previous message and footers so that you have to scroll
endlessly to get through the messages.
