Dan,
Iridite is the registered trade name for a series of chromate conversion
coatings sold by MacDermid, Inc. This series was obtained from (I think)
Allied Kelite in an acquisition over five years ago.
Conversion coatings historically were based on treatment of metal surfaces
with chromic acid to impart some particular property to them. Frequently,
that property was corrosion protection, particularly to zinc plated steel.
First, the zinc plate helps keep the steel from rusting, and then the
chromate coating makes the zinc further resist such conditions as salt spray,
etc.
Products in the Iridite line may also be used on magnesium, aluminum, and
zinc die cast. Iridite conversion coatings may be colored, similar to the
coloring of anodized aluminum. Also, conversion coatings may be used as a
primer for painting, or adhesion for further plating like magnetic coatings
on aluminum hard disk drives. Finally, Iridite coatings may now be made with
chromium solutions other than the highly polluting hexavalent chrome 6 ion.
Further questions - we better go off line with this.
