We also have this machine. As many of you know, CR Technology was purchased by Photondynamics a year or two ago. I received a news email from our local Photondynamics sales rep that effective 1/28/03 Photondynamics was leaving the AOI field effective immediately.

Subject: Re: [TN] CR Technology RTI-6520 AOI machine

We use this machine. We have had it inline since 4/02. We are pretty happy with it. We did find that it does really good for shorts but it has a hard time with opens on fine pitch devices. We had to really monitor it and at times we have modified how it inspects parts. An instance we noticed is say the part it should find is a 3441 but you put a part that is close to it like a 3440 and it will accept it. In these instances we found that we had the inspection of the part id in one window and because of the pixel counts it would receive a passing score. We then changed this to two windows and then it would reject the part.

It is very easy to program. It takes the same file setups as our P&P machines do. You do need to spend some time with it to get all of the orientation possibilities but as your library grows this minimizes over time.

My advice I would give on this machine or any other AOI is to not give up the inspection process until you are sure the machine is actually performing. Take all issues back to the machine. The program is only as good as the examples you throw at it.

Don't utilize 0201's so I have no opinion on them.
