Most of the time, charges on wood holders would be removed when handled by
a grounded operator or placed on a properly grounded ESD worksurface,
however, it would be humidity dependent.

Wood [concrete and paper] are hygroscopic and readily absorbs moisture from
the environment. An electrostatic charge is a surface phenomenon and it is
the perspiration layer on a person that provides the path-to-ground for
wrist straps and foot grounders.

The ESD Association sells its standards but used government funds to
develop ANSI/ESD S20.20. See www.esda.org and ANSI/ESD S20.20 Table 1 for
the minimum recommended technical requirement.

The ESD Association Symposiums have papers on all kinds of subjects & they
might have one on using wood handlers.

Subject: [TN] Documentation on ESD Aspects/Issue with Untreated Pine Wood

I am interested in a studies, tests, notes, experiences regarding ESD
aspects of using untreated common pine slotted 2X4 wood PCB Assembly
holders. I've not experienced any ESD damage or other effects myself. Has
anyone any other information on this subject?
