Hope this helps relative to your benchmarking efforts on training.
In response to eMedical Systems request for information and benchmarking of
training, our firm has been in the business of providing training and
certification to companies for many years. The programs we offer cover
everything from the basics of safety and ESD training all the way through
board level repair. Outlines and information on these programs can be found
at the following http://www.eptac.com/pcb_operator.html. In addition, by
contacting us we can supply you with outlines of our programs for ESD and
Component Identification.
With regard to delivery and retention, we have found that our customer base
responds more to viewing a process, performed by an instructor and then
performing the tasks required, verses the utilization of other media. Our
classes usually run 60% hands-on and 40% lecture and demonstration. We do,
however; supplement our programs with the use of video information, the
majority of which has been developed by the IPC.
In the Component Identification program, we use the IPC's desk reference
manual. It is a full color guide with visuals on various components and has
been well received. I might also recommend the other reference manuals for
through hole and surface mount programs. You can find them at the
following: http://www.planettraining.com/medialist.asp?M=1 . Scroll down to
the bottom of the index to view the manuals.
We have found that adults tend to respond and retain information longer when
presented in a visual and practical (hands-on) format. This also addresses
the language barrier issue, which is encountered at a large number of
companies where English is in fact a second language. Training is also a
little more palatable when delivered in smaller increments over a longer
period of time, say 3-4 hours a day over a given term. This may also help
with production concerns, given the amount of time required for the
employees to be absent from the production floor.
I hope this is of value in your evaluation process. Should you require a
more in-depth discussion, you can always contact us at the sites and numbers
below. Best of luck.

Subject: [TN] Training Programs
Good morning. I am a member of a cross-functional team put together to
evaluate the effectiveness of our operator training program. We have a
rather extensive program that the operators go through, but we are
interested in benchmarking other companies and their training program.
Some of the areas we cover are General Circuit board assembly, ESD,
Component Identification, SMT assembly equipment, and so on. In order
to benchmark our process, we would like to know what topics are covered
in your training program, methods of delivery, timing, retraining, and
effectiveness. And, one specific topic, component identification, we
would like to know more detailed information on your training material.
I know this is rather brief and vague for what we are asking, but we are
only looking for basics at this time.
Thanks for your time.
