Robert,
Of course, stripping HASL is a relatively common practice,
particularly where a secondary electrolytic Ni/Au process is required.
While it is unusual for this process to involve the stripping of HASL from
holes, it is possible with a horizontal solder stripping line. Another
alternative is to use a two step process, where the first step only strips
the HASL, but not the intermetallic layer. The second step removes the
final layer, without attacking the copper significantly.

John,

We tried stripping HASL once and regretted it. The HASL coating is not
uniform in thickness. The knees of the hole wall are particularly thin.
When
our captive board shop tried to strip the solder, they had to continue
until
the thickest areas of solder were removed. The knees however stripped much
quicker and thus exposed the underlying copper. We ended up with problems
at
the knees.

Thanks,

Subject: [TN] question about enig

I was wondering. We just got a batch of boards that had a HASL finish when
we needed a ENIG finish. Can the HASL be stripped off and then replaced
with
a ENIG finish. Our board house says no problem. But I just wanted to know
what people think. Will this be robust?
Any replies would be appreciated.
Thanks
John Foster
