Surface Block I take it you mean a Granite Surface Plate.  Calibration will
depend on use.  Machine Shops would use 12 months or less based on high
usage.

Method for calibration is a precision columinator
for measuring flatness.

An out of flat condition would require the plate to be lapped.  Some plates
will wear in one spot vs another based on the usage area of the plate.
