We have used Bivar spacers in several applications and have never had an
issue with them. They wash off with no residue and as for chemically, they
have not caused any problems. They are a cheap easy method to ensure that a
height requirement is met during wave soldering, the only draw back being
the time used to assembly them to the component.

Subject: [TN] Wash-Away Spacers

Anyone had success using wash-away spacers during wave-soldering, then
removing them by aqueous cleaning? We're looking at them mostly to
control standoff of transistor cans and vertically-mounted resistors.

Looking at the Bivar catalog, spacers come in two types, normal and
"effervescent", which dissolve more quickly.

Do they wash away completely? Leave any residue that affects conformal
coat adhesion? Any problems with the materials reacting with the wash
chemistry, either saponifier or alcohol based?
