hi,
mil-std-171, 'finishing of metal and wood surfaces', is a 'comprehensive index of specifications and guide to the preparation and finishing of many types of surfaces'. you should find that it is has more information than you will ever want to know about finishes. surprisingly, it hasn't been inactivated.
a useful resource for this kind of information would be a paint company that supplies paint to industrial finishers. cardinal industrial finishes and valspar come to mind.
