Hi Roland

I have tried what you are describing. ( dedicated PCB with conductive
elastomer pads ). Bottom line: the principle works but is very sensitive and
fragile and yes, expensive.
You need to consider things like: Volumes to be tested, cleanliness of the
product, surfacefinish of the product etc...

I tooled one (high volume flipchip board, 8 mil pitch) using this approach.

After a number of issues, I changed to other, more robust technologies.
