Jeffrey,

We have a military customer who builds backplanes, and coats the
assemblies with a thin coating of no more than 30 microns of reasonably
soft acrylic conformal coating before push fitting the connectors.

The things to be careful of include the coating thickness (if it is too
thick, it is difficult to push the connectors through) and the selection
of the conformal coating itself (soft acrylics work well, urethanes and
silicones are very difficult to push through, epoxies and UV curables...
forget it!)
