I believe this phenomenon is called "draw-bridging", and my theory is that
it's caused by the contraction of too much solder in the solder joints
pulling the component's end-caps apart. I have seen two or three examples
of this kind of failure on 0603 resistors, and in each case, I found that
there was excessive solder in the joints.

I am seeing 0402 resistor components that have part of the resistive
element
broken our or chipped off.  This affects the resistance of the component
requiring replacement.  Can anyone tell me what the most common cause of
this chip out is?
