I sit next to guy with a Phd in the subject so I thought I'd better ask him.

His answer was typically academic - 'it depends'.

There are a number of different AR coats but his guess was it was likely to be
magnesium oxide which may be removed with nitric acid - however you'd better
check the compatibility with the substrate first.

He also observed that AR coating is generally 0.25 > 0.50 micrometers thick so
if you see a scratch it's almost certain the substrate is scratched also.
