Hi Rudy: In Gerard's reflow/fusing question he doesn't mention using the hot
oil process, he might be using IR fusing.

In either case as Rudy stated it is usually something upline from the fusing
process.

1. Most Sn/Pb electroplate baths these days are not kept in the best
condition for fusing Sn/Pb, the are usually used as an etch resist bath.
There are many things in the bath that can affect the fusing properties of
the deposit. Some of the most common are organic contamination, improper
current density, trace metal build up (i.e. Cu, Fe, etc) and poorly
controlled bath chemistry.

2. You are probably doing ammoniacal etching of the outerlayers. If the
boards are not properly rinsed and processed thru solder conditioner and
dried they will present fusing problems.

3. Boards should be fused as soon as possible after etching. Long storage
times of the porous electrodeposit will cause oxidation and result in poor
fusing.

4. If you are using IR fusing, the age and Sp. Gr. and application of the
flux are critical. So is the condition, output and cleanliness of the fusing
lamps and reflectors.

Subject: Re: [TN] need SnPb reflow line resource

I am old enough to have experienced more hot oil reflowing than I care to
relate.

My company published some trouble shooting guides for hot oil reflow...which
are still available to you, or anyone still doing this.

Bottom line, back in the days when we were selling hot oil for reflow, is
that we stopped sampling people fuse oil or flux to solve reflow problems,
because we found they were always caused by things that happened before the
panel went into the oil.

We got pretty good at trouble shooting the pre-fusing process.

I would be happy to discuss the matter with you personally, (650-962-8004)
or send you the trouble shooting guides.

Good Luck
