We tried a Marsh Mini Mark Ink jet system. I am not sure if that is want you call a DoD system. It is not a CIJ system. It would have probably been fine if we were using in on a continuously running line. Every time we stopped printing for a few minutes the ink would dry and clog up the print head. We used it for about a month. We decided we it was not worth the maintenance time.

After that we called Willett and bought another CIJ system from them. We have 3 of these in house. All of them were demo models bought at nice discounts.

Subject: [TN] PCB barcode marking

Hi All, not very long ago I asked for your input on ink jet marking
systems to apply basic serial / assembly number information on our
customer's boards (we're a CEM.) One of the responses mentioned
Drop-on-Demand ink jet printing, specifically Markem's print system.
Initially we were only considering Continuous Ink Jet systems, but now would
like to include DoD for consideration, and I'm having trouble finding
information. Does anyone know the advantages / disadvantages between the
CIJ and DoD ink jet systems ? Does anyone have experience with a DoD system
?

Note: when discussing this, the question always comes up: why not
consider laser printing ?? Our concerns are: first we are a contract
manufacturer and we see every conceivable type of PCB known, and therefore,
second we're worried about potential damage to the PCB traces, and lastly it
seems that reworking the marking would be difficult.

Thanks in Advance,

Roger Cook
