Believe it or not, an eye exam would be checking to see if the inspectors can see!
They do need to be tested to see if they can see color and to see what their vision is.
Of course, if they are using magnification to inspect, then the 20/20 test may not matter, but, like everything else, as we age, so do our eyes, and, if we are relying on people to inspect, we should at least make sure they can see.

IF an inspector is inspecting without the use of magnification, and they do not have 20/20, they should be wearing corrective lenses to see properly.

One of the best ways to certify an inspector is to use a "Buddy Microscope" which has two sets of lenses to look through. A board is placed under the scope with known defects and the instructor and gets to look thru the microscope with the inspector at the same time. As each defect is found, the inspector should identify what it is, and why it's a failure with the instructor viewing at the same time.

Subject: [TN] Vision Requirements for Inspectors

        Technetters,

We are bouncing around the idea to formally "Certify" our inspectors. I have
seen on this site several times that an "Eye Exam" is part of that
certification. What exactly are they checking for during that eye exam
(Color blindness, healthiness of eyes, 20/20??)?

Would like to hear from as many as possible on the subject of the eye exam,
plus how you certify your inspectors.

Thanks in advance for your responses,
