Roger,
I think you missed a few vendors. VideoJet and Domino are two
relatively big players in the Continuous Ink Jet (CIJ) space. Markem is
another vendor in the Drop on Demand (DOD space). These systems are OK for
putting some human readable text on a board, and require a good PM schedule
to keep the running well, but a laser does a much better job. If you plan on
putting a 1D bar code, or 2D symbol serial number on your boards, you should
look at a laser. You can get CIJ to print a data matrix, but you have to
spend a lot of time ensuring the symbol stays readable.
We had CIJ systems in house applying human readable text and the
ME's were not that happy with them (always breaking down and very messy. We
reevaluated the CIJ technology when we went to 2D data matrix serial numbers
and went with lasers.

Regards,
Chris

Subject: [TN] Ink Jet Printing for PCBs

I'm looking for information about ink jet marking systems for printed
circuit boards in a contract manufacturing environment. We would like to
use this type of equipment to apply our serial number and the customer's
identification information, which currently is done with Brady type labels.
I have identified two: Jet Equipment and Nortek Automation; if anyone is
currently using this equipment, I would be interested in hearing how well
it's working. Also, I would like to know if there are other manufacturers
of this kind of equipment.
