Hi Daan,

HASL process in general has its limitations, but it seems to me that your supplier needs to improve the control of the HASL process. It is known that the T/L thickness varies on the same side from feature to feature based on the feature size and orientation. However to have one side consistently very low (0.4 micron = 16 micro inch) is unacceptable. With such a very this coating the T/L alloy is Lead rich because of the intermetalic migration.

Your supplier should revise and adjust the air pressure, the air knives angles, distance between the air knives and the board, . . . .

It is also known that horizontal HASL machines give better T/L coverage than vertical ones.
