Poh, what you say should be achievable, but in practice isn't always. We
use five subcontract manufacturers for our hardware and cable builds and
each tells us we provide the best documentation of any of their customers.
However, I employ a hardware quality engineer who travels to each vendor and
seldom passes a first article the first time. Usually, what he catches are
misinterpretations of the documentation, sometimes by the floor operators,
sometimes by the manufacturing engineer who prepares the floor instructions.
He often finds discrepant or unapproved materials have been bought and let
reach the floor. In short, his job is to review every facet of the vendors
processes leading up to and including the first article before the run
progresses and the end result be MRB'ed or scrapped. While the cost would
be taken by the vendor, having an entire lot go bad and delivery delayed
does nothing for our customers.

In short, it's a useful double check against human frailty. While each
person along the process is doing the best he or she can, often, there are
problems they're just not aware of. Doing and approving the first article
inspection helps ensure the remainder of the lot is built correctly. By the
way, 100% of our products, including some seriously complex circuits, are
ship-to-stock to our warehouse. We feel first articles are an important
part of the process.

Subject: [TN] First Article Buy-off Process for SMT & Wave Solder

Hi Technetters,

I would to share some experience with you all.

I have been working for 5 companies. I realize that every
company that I worked for, has a buy-off system; so called
the first article buy-off before releasing the either a SMT or
wave soldering line for mass production.

I am rather curious why the people who are managing the
lines cannot perform their own self check, but rather
depends upon someone to check their work and to ensure
they loaded the right to the machine or to the boards.

I would like to hear your opinion about this system as I find it
rather stupid and it is wasting time.

Poh
