We serialize our bare boards utilizing a labeler made by CompuType in St.
Paul, MN.  It's a model LA3000, and the labels are adhesive-backed kapton
material that displays both a barcode and a human-readable number.  I
believe we secure our labels from them also.  Here's a link to their

Our unit is about six months old, and we frequently have our maintenance
team performing adjustments.  I don't know if that's typical for this type
of application, but I do know it creates a substantial amount of downtime.
Even so, it sure beats performing the process by hand.

We've always screened or scribed serial #'s on our bare boards (when
required).
I'm wondering how other shops accomplish this.

Also:
We're considering using an ink stamp instead.
Any suggestions for an air-dry ink that will survive the rigors of assembly?
