We had the same complaints of "Cold Solder" when we switched to Immersion
Silver boards. It is a matter of education for manufacturing as well as
customers. Alpha Metals (Alpha Level ) silver process as well as Mac Dermid
have good pictures to show as examples. I'm sure the gold suppliers have
also.

As with our inspectors, you might start to get complaints of "non-wetting"
or "de-wetting". This happened when we switched to gold. The appearance is
slightly different than HASL.

Hi Poh! The visual appearance of a solder joint is not necessarily an
indicator of a solder joint's reliability. The old "bright and shiny"
criteria should have become extinct but some old habits apparently have a
life of their own. IPC-STD-001B, paragraph 9.2.4 "Solder Connection" is one
reference you can use to demonstrate to your customer that "bright and
shiny" is not a requirement. Good Luck.

Subject: [TN] Dull Joint on the Gold plated PCB.

Hi Technetters,

Is there anyone able to help me on having a smooth
shining solder joint on gold-plated PCB.

As I understand that the board with gold-plated gives
a relatively dull joint.

However, I have issue convincing my customer that
this symptom is normal.

Poh
