I share your pain. I have the same problems. In my ( worst ) case, the determination of moisture sensitive was made by a third party in charge of deign. We are required to treat these parts accordingly regardless of the manufacturer or vendor requirements. If the vendor does not consider them to be they may not package them in moisture barrier bags or label them. This causes our first common problem. Since we have identified tham as MS we end up either sending them back or baking and bagging in house. If the vendor instead labels them as class 1 we are covered and don't have to do anything else.
Second problem. Parts labeled as MS that are not. When we put on the P.O. that they are to be labeled IAW J-STD 033 some vendors label ALL of the parts as moisture sensitive. At that point we have to treat them as such. As a lowly production person I don't get much say in any of this. The best that I can offer is.
1. If it comes in as MS and you don't think it should be contact the qmanufacturer NOT the vendor.
2. If comes not MS and you think it should be contact the manufacturer NOT the vendor. Hasn't done me any good because but it is worth a try.

Subject: [TN] Moisture sensitive parts

Hi everybody,

Lately we have had a few problems with moisture sensitive part precautions.
During the design phase, a part is identified as moisture sensitive. The
purchase orders are then modified to include packaging/labeling notices
identifying the moisture requirements. Then, when the parts are received,
some are properly packaged and labeled and some are not. In all cases when
we contact the supplier we are told that the part in question is no longer
sensitive [component assembly processes were changed, etc] or we have parts
come identified as sensitive which were not when we created the design. So
the $1000 QUESTION is, do you try to identify moisture sensitive parts on
your design documentation or do you rely on your supplier to properly
identify and package sensitive parts and just handle them accordingly when
you receive them???

We have had a number of discrepancies, and I was wondering what everyone
else does to avoid this kind of thing. As always, thank you in advance for
any help you can provide.

Have fun,

Jim Jenkins
