Other than the bad press it has received and the often-stupid
legislation surrounding it, what is wrong with methylene chloride? We
have been using it successfully for nearly a century and, with
reasonable care, it does the job well and safely. As the OSHA PEL was
suddenly reduced a couple of years ago from 500 ppm to 25 ppm, this
scared the pants off many people, but this is a case of over-reaction.
There is no sound reason for this. The European Centre for Ecotoxicology
and Toxicology of Chemicals (ECETOC) have published two Technical
Reports on the substance, one on the human risk assessment and the other
the carcinogenicity in humans (references on request). The first
indicates that the reversible risk due to COHb is the most likely to
cause short-term harm, but it requires really massive doses (typically >
1000 ppm OEL) over long periods. As for chronic harm, this is best
illustrated by the following extrapolated statistic: if the WHOLE adult
(20 - 65) working population of the USA were exposed to methylene
chloride at 50 ppm for 8 hours per day for 5 days per week for 52 weeks,
it is estimated that 1 person may die of solvent-induced cancer before
(s)he is 85 in 100 years. In other words, if the current legislation,
which is severe, is respected (and it is possible to do so), there is
absolutely no risk in using methylene chloride. Let's not give a dog a
worse name than it already has because legislators are ignorant of the
true nature of this useful substance.
