Eric and Brian

In my neck of the woods (midwestern USA), rubbing alcohol is 70% Isopropanol
USP (isopropyl alcohol).

Eric, the nearest thing in your neck of the woods is known as surgical
spirit. It is a denatured ethanol which is not supposed to contain any
denaturants or impurities that could be absorbed through the skin, hence
its use for rubbing the contact points where patients have pressure
applied to them from the mattress. It is somewhat purer than "meths" or
methylated spirits which can be denatured with any one or many different
substances and is usually coloured violet and may be toxic (not to be
confused with methyl alcohol or methanol, which is very toxic and easily
absorbed through the skin). Personally, I think Doug's Mountain Dew
would also work - and is more agreeable.
