Remember, there is a world of difference in the chemistry between a liquid
hand dishwashing detergent, and a machine dishwashing detergent.
The hand dishwashing detergents are all surfactant, nothing else, and will
remove lightly bound soils, but no insoluble metal salts.
The machine dishwashing compounds contain a high loading of complex
phosphates, or their equivalent, which are quite good at complexing metal
salts, as well as alkaline buffers, Silicates, and a very small amount of a
surfactant.... so called "rinse aids".
