Dual footprint pattern: Been there, done that also (second source
reasons). Usually you cannot place the SMT exactly on the TH
foortprint, because the holes hit the SMD pads. Then you can put the
patterns with a little offset.

--SMD--TH SMD--TH---
But then you may have a problem with isolation reqirements.
