Hear! Hear! Brian,

As an ex-pat Brit now living in Singapore and working in its fledgling
Aerospace Industry, I concur with what you said. In 40 years, under the
'Guided Democracy' style of government, but largely through the vision and
unprecedented shrewdness of one man, Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore grew from a
trouble-torn small island to the leading economy of its region. As a
country to live in, it has its "faults", but I judge that as a westerner
living in an eastern society.

As Brian said, it is virtually trouble-free, and most people enjoy a very
good standard of living, even though there is no welfare system safety net
as we know it. People here are very self-reliant and very bright. They have
learned to work as part of a team, and that has given them considerable
social cohesion.

Creative Engineering, designers and manufacturers of THE sound and video
portion of many a PC is a Singaporean company, and many western countries
are now looking at Singapore's methods in search of ways to curb the rising
crime and costs in their own countries. Singapore's skill levels in
electronics manufacturing is still a long way behind that of Europe and
America in terms of producing high-reliability equipment, I agree, but
they're keen to learn. The Company I work for is principally a Maintenance,
Repair and Overhaul company, dealing with civil and military, fixed-wing
and rotary-wing aircraft. They deal with major items such as Engines,
Gearboxes and Propellors, and equipment like Radios, Giros and
Instrumentation. They can repaint you an aircraft of any size beautifully,
and frequently carry out Passenger-to-Cargo conversions for some very major
customers. Their engineering is extremely good, though their organisation
in terms of efficient systems, structures and procedures could bear
improvement.

Earl, to be patronising about this small country's remarkable achievements
is very unfair, and I hope you will apologise to Mei. This place may only
be less than an hour's drive from one side to the other (less from top to
bottom), and it is run more like a large Company than a country, but it's a
far better place to live and work, and grow in than a great many others I
could name. Hell, I've learned more here in 18 months on the job than I did
in 10 years back home.

Peter

Earl

Aren't you being more than a little patronising to our Singaporean
friend? High technology in his country can often leave what is seen in
the US and Europe standing. We should try to learn from them or, at
least, appreciate that this is a country that has risen to very high
levels of technology in all walks of life, largely by its own efforts,
since its independence from Malaysia. Furthermore, it is one of the
safest and cleanest places in the world, with virtually no poverty. I'm
not saying it is Utopia, but it's better, on the whole, than many places
in the world that I could name.

May I suggest you read the Home Page at http://www.dso.org.sg/ and then,
perhaps, apologise to Mei?

Sorry!

Brian
