Paul, right now 0805's or 0603's are our preferred sizes, but we're fast
moving into 0402's (yecchh). However, we've never had any real problem with
any size as we're totally anal about adhering to our subcontract
manufacturers DFM guidelines with regard to orientation with the wave. One
suggestion that we've had great success with is to hold a DFM review before
any board, no matter how simple or complex, goes out for the first
prototype. The review team consists of the engineer, designer, quality
engineer, production scheduler and me (burned out I.E. now playing manager).
It took awhile, but when the engineers and designers learned they couldn't
get their first prototype fabbed until the goofs were fixed, they got
religion real fast. It's been years since we kicked one back for passive
orientation issues and only recently did we have to employ our first
selective solder pallets. We use a sign off form and everyone reviewing
initials their acceptance. I can't remember the last time either of our
subcontract houses griped about those kind of issues. Another trick is at
approval of initial placement, require your manufacturer to sign off on it
as well before routing begins. We're doing some pretty complex stuff and
using these methods, having no design related manufacturing problems.

Subject: [TN] Bottom side SMT passives

What is the "preferred" size package of choice for wave soldering
passives when board space in design layout forces the passives to the
bottom side but the component count and lines/width spacing requirements
are not tight?

A: 1206
B: 0805
C: 0603
D: doesn't really matter my yield is best for any type

I have my preference but just wanted to see how others feel in regard to
this type of situation.
