As a recently former 5DX programming specialist, I can honestly say that protos
are a bit much for the 5DX. However, I have had GREAT success in using it in
this manner. The folks at SCI Huntsville know this. I had become proficient
enough to run first board in around eight hours, tweak 500-1500 components in
around 10 hours. So roughly, in around 2 days, I would have a working program.
Then it would just take the time to run the boards. We had a customer in
Huntsville that required 100% inspection of all parts - passive included. A
little much, but it was done and with HUGE success. Also, Earl knows this first
hand, right?

Subject: [TN] Benefits of auto 5DX on proto builds
I have perceived automated 5DX inspection as a good high volume tool but
not agile enough to support proto builds. We do manual 5DX inspection on
early proto's but there are 300-400 components (including 6 BGA's) with
1200-2000 defect opportunities. Does anyone on this list use automated 5DX
successfully on proto builds of 50 to 100 units? I would appreciate your
comments.
Thanks, Dave
