I would submit a couple of ideas.  First - JNJ Industries makes a tooling
plate for MPM printers that is laid out as a grid pattern.  Sort of looks
like the old battleship game, if you know what I mean.  All you have to do is
get the support pins into the proper grid holes and you are perfectly
repeatable.  There is a setup tool that goes with it to help make sure you
are not hitting any parts.
Second - there is a company called SafeChek  (www.safechek.com) that laser
cuts ESD safe plastics into templates for almost any purpose.  I have them
for support pin verification and for component verification after assembly.
