Hi Bev,
saw once that a crack must never be longer that the size of the solder grain size. As soon as the crack exceeds that size, it's a presumptive danger. Sounds a bit of an exaggeration to me, but  have seen that expression more than once.

Shades of voids in BGAs...   How big of a crack in thermally cycled solder
joints is too big of a crack?
