Aren't IMCs natural part of any solder joint? Strongest link in the chain..if not Kirkendall rotten.
What do we know about new IMC families with lots of new members like Sb,Bi,Mg,Cd etc. in the Plumbumless era? Johan Liu gave me a list of nearly one hundred new combinations, some of which are already available from the alloy makers. As far as I understand, converting to Pb-less is successful, but can also give you some odd experiences.

The problem with "rework" is not IMC layers getting too thick, but the damage
done to the solder joints of neighboring components and the PWB. In all my
years in reliability, I have never seen an "Intermetallic Joint Failure."
