Larry,

I would definitely recommend you to talk to your component supplier,
if the problem is real and big you should complain. As far as inspection,
some SMT pick and place machines have a coplanarity inspection feature on
their vision system, well actually it can be separate on some, although it
really slows down the placement speed, a big impact for throughput. I don't
really know of any off line equipment that could do that. I would really
recommend you should go back to the supplier and return the entire faulty
lot. If you still want to pursue inspection, you could verify the
coplanarity by placing a component against a flat surface, a granite
polished slab or surface would do very well.

Subject: [TN] bent component leads

Technet,
Our company is experiencing a problem with bent leads from our
programming house. They program both PLCC and QFP components for us and
they randomly end up bending (coplanarity) leads on these components. We
tried to inspect for them in our receiving inspection department using
manual inspection, but its really difficult to see these minor bends.

My question is there any type of automated equipment that is designed
to inspect for this problem? Our placement machines can check gull wing
components, but can't inspect J leads.

Thanks,
-Larry Koens-
