Hi Richard,
Here are may thoughts on part numbers.
Class codes, or intelligent part numbers i.e.; 100XXX is a resistor, 200XXX
is a cap, 508-100 is a subassembly of product 508 etc. with this system
leave lots of room for adding class codes (101XXX is a through hole resistor
102XXX is surface mount). The problem with this system seems to be that as
soon as several people start issuing part numbers it gets all screwed up.
The other system I have seen is no system at all each new part gets the next
number in line. This is a nightmare if inventory isn't on a central data
base and easily accusable, but works surprisingly well when it is. After all
what we are really interested in is the part *description* isn't it?
When it comes to parts list there aint no beating an indented BOM in my
mind, again this works better with a central data base.

Hope this is the kind of info you are looking for,
Dan
