Hi Wm. Dean May! I recommend that you look at your 1010 steel problem from
a different perspective. No solder alloy will wet to 1010 steel unless you
activate the 1010 surface with an applicable flux. Soldering to steel
typically requires a very "active" flux (e.g IPC-JSTD-004 type H) which, if
not properly removed, can lead to corrosion later in life. I recommend
talking with the flux vendors (e.g Kester, Alpha, Indium, ESP, etc) to get
their recommendation for an appropriate flux and cleaning procedure. Once
you are able to wet the 1010 surface then you need to decide what solder
alloy to use - are you looking for solderability, mechanical strength, high
temperature stability, etc.? - you can see where I am going with this. Good
Luck.

Subject: [TN] Solder alloy for 1010 Steel

We have some 1010 cold rolled steel board stiffeners that require soldering
to a circuit card like a through-hole part. Does anyone know if there are
any solder alloys that will wet to 1010 steel? We could have them
electroplated with tin/lead to make them solderable but was curious if
there
was an alternative.

Thanks for your consideration!
