George,

I hate to come up with a non technical answer here, but this may just be a
matter of fit, form , and function.  My thought is that there might be some
sort of faceplate assembly for this product (if you are a subcontractor and
do not perform final box assembly, you might be able to scrounge up the
faceplate to see how much tolerance you have in the SMT mounting process).
As long as it fits into the faceplate and functions I am not sure why you
would want to run the component through a rework process.
If you have any control over the PCB design, you could always tighten up
your design to help eliminate/reduce skewing.  Hope this helps.
