mmm there's a thought... but suggest also plenty of rinsing as well though
after to remove neutral salts,
also make sure neat chemicals don't "see" each other direct.
A friend of mine used to put bits of copper in his iron pickling bath, he
didn't know why but just did because he was told to by an old-time expert
and so on back. It's sort of sense as amongst other things the copper would
plate out on the iron and passivate it I suppose, and this is not too far in
concept from the old time "killed spirits" fluxes (where Zinc is added).
Best regards
Mike

Earl, the bad news is that when you have rust, the surface has been
seriously
activated, and virtually any chemistry that removes rust easily will leave a
surface that re-rusts very rapidly.
Hydrochloric Acid is likely the fastest, easiest way to get rust off a
surface, and the easiest way to get fairly concentrated Hydrochloric Acid is
to buy a bottle of toilet cleaner, most liquid toilet cleaners are pretty
concentrated HCl. The best way to prevent rust from re-occurring is
neutralize the acid as soon as the rust is removed, and for a cheep and easy
way to do that, use a diluted laundry detergent.
This will still leave a surface that re-rusts faster than the original
rusted, however, short of coating the surface with an organic coating, it is
the best/easiest approach.
Good luck
