Hi Julien! Now that's a question I would have never anticipated being asked
- you want to oxidize a component finish! The real trick is to create an
oxidized surface that is realistic so that your operator's are not trying
to solder the impossible. But you are in luck  - the JSTD-002A committee
asked the question a year ago but in terms of "is steam conditioning the
most appropriate conditioning environment to use". And since I didn't have
a Master Thesis topic at the time I chose to research the oxidation of tin.
My thesis is nearly complete (words of wisdom - get your advanced degree
when you aren't working and have a family!) and I will be reporting the
results in 2002. My recommendation is an 8 hour bake at 125C - the
oxidation thickness and composition is similar to the oxidation condition
after 1 year of ambient storage. Good luck.

        We implement a more structured training program and in a part of
this
programs, we want to train the operator by give them pratice on oxidized
tin-lead plated component. Does someone know a way to accelerate the
natural
oxiditation process of tin-lead alloys using in electronic to simulate and
heavily oxidized component ? Thank.
