                      Sanmina Backplane Fab Shop Tour
                      Joint meeting with SMTA-Boston

The Greater Boston Chapter of the IPC Designer's Council will
hold its next meeting Tuesday, Oct 16th on site and hosted
by Sanmina's Backplane fabrication facility in Wilmington, MA.

      Topic:

The presentation will include a technology road map for the
printed circuit business as compared to the rest of the indus-
try. An overview will include details on the printed circuit
process flow with attention to specific issues like thickness,
size, plating, material types, surface finishes and equipment
requirements specific to back plane technology as compared to
standard printed circuit designs. There will be a discussion
on issues relative to selecting a Back Plane Manufacturer and
capabilities that should be in place within the process. This
will include some basic design for manufacturability concerns
including recommendations and limitations of the materials and
finishes relative to different assembly and electrical needs.

The presentation will be followed by a brief tour of the major
steps in the process through the Wilmington printed circuit
      facility.

      President's Note:

Once again I am very pleased to be able to offer a joint topic
with the local chapter of the SMTA. There is no more natural
meeting ground for such joint interest as the fab shop, as it
is here that our preparations get ready for assembly.

On a serious note, the steering committee has made and sec-
onded a motion to donate $1000 to the Red Cross Disaster Re-
lief Fund. To do this requires a 51% vote by the membership.
The general fund will support this with no impacts. Please
speak up; email, fax or call Judy or myself so that we may be
of some small help to the tremendous burdens of the day.

      Thank you for your support.

      Mission:

The world of Printed Circuit Design is increasingly complex.
In order to add genuine value in the physical design process
we must apply ourselves in constant improvement, so that we
may have the ready answers and resources needed to meet that
next impossible packaging challenge. Without those resources
it will most certainly be impossible.

The Greater Boston Chapter of the IPC Designer's Council is
committed to presenting stake holders from every aspect of the
packaging realm. Our hope is to help you gain insight and un-
derstanding of the many possibilities in solving core problems.

Your attendance, help and participation are most welcome.

      Thanks and regards,
--
