Tom,
What CAD system are you using ?
I have been using the largest placement grid I can, (2.54mm, 1.27mm, .635mm)
starting with the largest and working my way down to fit the last components
in. As far as routing grid is concerned, I set my design rule clearances
correctly and route gridless, and vias on 1.27mm or .635mm grid. This
allows me to keep everything orderly and enough copper between vias for
pwr/gnd fills, and keeps a uniform test grid.

Subject: [DC] routing/ placement grid
Hello,
I have a board with 0.8 mm, 0.5 mm, 0.65 mm, 1.254 mm, and 2.54 mm pitch
components.
The question is what is the best placement grid/ routing grid?
Thank you.
