Hello Peter.

it'll be difficult to minimise residues forma cored wire system unless you
can apply some method of controlling the amount of wire and hence flux used.
One way of 'reducing' residue from cored wire flux would be to ask your
supplier for a water soluble cored wire the flux is water soluble not the
wire) you could then wash off the flux residue post soldering.

Alternatively you might also ask for a lower percent flux content, but there
won't be much difference 1% flux compared to 2% or 3% flux. The main control
will be in your operation or use of the wire.

If the residue is a problem because it's very noticeable, again you could
ask for a clear residue material, or a rosin free wire. In the former the
residue will be less co loured therefore possibly less noticeable, in the
latter there'll be more volatiles and slightly less residue. Again though.
it really comes down to your control in the operation.

I've just read Doug Paul's response, in general terms he's correct, but
cored wire fluxes are not used in paste formulations. Apart from a common
use of rosin and then not all cored wire flux use rosins, the cored wire
fluxes are far more basic than paste flux formulations. They're more akin to
liquid flux systems, but even then the latest wave soldering fluxes are way
beyond the majority of cored wire systems.

Subject: [TN] No-clean solder wire

Hello,

If I want to minimize the amount of flux residues left
on the finished assemblies. What specs. should I be
concerned with when selecting the solder wire?
Currently we use Alpha metals No-clean Telecore P3.
Can someone please explain the influence of flux core
%?

Is there a documented reference for recommended flux
type for soldering wires?

Thank you.

Peter
