If I want to minimize the amount of flux residues left
on the finished assemblies.
*Good luck. I don't think you will find a specification that will tell you
what you want. ROSE or SEC testing won't do it. There are no accepted
standards for ion chromatography data. There is a visual assessment, such
as found in A-610, but that is highly subjective. In addition, you may
have a low level of flux when averaged across the whole assembly surface,
but a high concentration in a local area, such as where you did touch up.
What specs. should I be concerned with when selecting the solder wire?
*Peter, the flux inside cored wire is the same paste flux qualified per
J-STD-004. So you want a wire with a core flux qualified to J-STD-004.
Specify the alloy in the wire to J-STD-00 (5 or 6)
Currently we use Alpha metals No-clean Telecore P3.
Can someone please explain the influence of flux core
%?
*Core percent is just that, the percentage of flux in the core. The larger
the diameter, generally the more flux you have.
Is there a documented reference for recommended flux
type for soldering wires?
*Use the same guidelines you use for selecting a regular flux. The flux
manufacturers use the same flux composition, but add a binder agent to make
it a paste.
